About Starlink
Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, Elon Musk's aerospace company. Unlike traditional geostationary satellites, Starlink uses a constellation of thousands of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver internet with significantly lower latency and higher speeds than conventional satellite broadband. Starlink launched in Australia in 2021 and has been rapidly adopted by rural and remote customers who previously had no access to fast broadband. With download speeds typically ranging from 50-200 Mbps and latency of 20-40ms, Starlink offers a dramatically better experience than NBN Sky Muster satellite for many use cases including video calls and streaming. The service requires a one-time purchase of Starlink hardware (dish and router) and a monthly subscription. While more expensive than fixed-line NBN, Starlink has been transformative for Australians in areas with poor or no terrestrial broadband coverage, finally bringing usable high-speed internet to the bush.
Best For
Low-Earth orbit satellite delivers 50-200 Mbps with dramatically lower latency than Sky Muster. Best upgrade path for remote properties.
